Conservative Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North West Leicestershire Craig Smith has welcomed the latest economic news which shows inflation falling to 2.3% and UK economic growth for the first quarter of 2024 being ahead of expectations at 0.6%.
Craig recently visited the Amazon and DHL depots at the East Midlands Gateway as well observing the operations of rail freight operators Maritime Transport. During these visits, Craig met with Amazon staff who had worked from the bottom of the organisation to senior management, saw the impact of robots to increase productivity and discussed with both Amazon and DHL the steps they are taking to make the operations more sustainable and to decarbonise their transportation. This also a discussion point with Maritime Transport who are making increasing use of the railhead at the Gateway.
Craig said 'It was illuminating to see first hand the scale of the operations at the East Midlands Gateway. Thanks to the Conservative Government together with the Conservative controlled County and District Council's, we have bought thousands of jobs into North West Leicestershire. The logistics sector is massive for this district and offers great opportunities for career progression which was illustrated to me on my visit.
Craig continued ' We have a number of multi national businesses at the Gateway who are showing confidence in the local and national economy by increasing and expanding their operations. This recent news on economic growth and inflation clearly shows that the UK and North West Leicestershire are on the right economic path.'
